Buying Tips for the Amateur Shopper

Sometimes, shopping can feel like a chore. From crowded stores to missing sizes to shipping delays, the modern shopper has a lot of (often painful) logistics to navigate in order to go about looking and feeling good. While personal shopping can take time, it often proves to have been worthwhile in the long run.

While parking lots, sidewalk traffic, and online shipping ETAs are out of the hands of image consultants, we do know a few things about style, sizing, and substance. Consider these tips next time you need to focus on the task at hand simply:

  • Shirts – Always go for a good fit (shoulders, waist, the back, and the front closure should be all be in place and yet moveable), and go for a sturdy fabric
  • Jeans – Try to find a dark wash with the right amount of stretch that also fits well with your body. I’d suggest to get one extra pair, and then hem one pair for flat shoes and another for heels
  • Raincoat – Go for a timeless style trench coat. It can lift up an outfit and will never go out of fashion
  • Dark Colored Suit — A great-quality dark suit is a wardrobe essential. Spend more on at least one well-tailored gabardine suit in your best color
  • Dress – A dark dress, in your best color palette, will fit well for nearly any occasion
  • Jacket – A perfect fitted jacket can instantly upgrade your overall look. Look for a jacket that fits the widest part of your body, with jacket shoulders that sit on your shoulders comfortably
  • Professional Shoes – If you can afford it, purchase one pair of high-quality classic pumps per season that can endure daily use. Look for soft leathers that breathe, have extra cushioning, and that have comfortable heel heights (your feet will thank you!)

Our next “Personal Shopper” 1-day training is on May 29, 2017. If shopping is your passion and you’d like to shop for others, this is the class that will help you find out if personal shopping is for you! www.nycimageconsultantacademy.com

Traveling Together: Common Courtesies in an Age of Rudeness

Kindness

Getty Image

Over the past few weeks, we’ve witnessed a large number of changes in our country’s leadership. From appointments to firings to structural changes and lawsuits, it’s been a fiery few weeks for the New Administration as the DC political set moves past the inauguration.

Whatever side you’re on, one thing is for certain: when you travel with a companion, you should always wait for her/him when getting out of a car. There are no exceptions to this rule; whether your companion is your wife, your child, your husband, your business associate or your friend. If you are traveling together to a formal engagement, you should ensure each member of your party has exited the car before moving your next expected location, together. “Together” being the key word here.

Treating your spouse/partner/friend kind and respectful way is essential in this age of rudeness. After all, it was Mark Twain who said: “A person should be allowed to have a few redeeming vices, but never bad manners.”

When you travel in groups of 2 or more, how do you ensure that your party sticks together as a unit?

Kindness & Courtesy in 2017

kindness & CourtesyWith January comes change, each and every year. But this year, change is even more exaggeratedly in the air. Tomorrow, Donald Trump becomes 45th President of the United States. Through the past year+, we’ve witnessed an incredible volatile campaign that finally concludes this week, and tomorrow, a new chapter begins. Some in our community are nervous; many are excited. Most of the rest of us waiver somewhere in the middle.

Politics aside, one practice we can all keep the top of mind this week (and beyond) is – being kind, and being courteous. The two go hand in hand.

Kindness begins at home, by greeting your family, friends, roommates, and neighbors with a friendly smile and greeting each day – even when you’re feeling stressed or anxious. When it comes to colleagues, giving good eye contact to acknowledge their ideas, presence, and contributions means so much – even when you have pressing matters to tend to on the smartphone in your hand.

Each of us, as family members, workers and as citizens, has a social responsibility to our environment and our communities. Being kind to everyone, even to those who are unkind to you, will pay back in spades someday.

Simple acts, like holding the door for people behind you, or returning the shopping cart to the store, make a big difference. Thinking twice before sharing a juicy piece of gossip that might hurt more than help, shows kindness. Writing a handwritten thank you card, or adding a little extra tip for service workers, shows gratitude as well as courtesy.

What helps you remember to be kind and courteous during your difficult days?

Ace & Jig: The Best Up-and-Coming Brand of 2016

From their cursive-y logo to their 2016 Fashion Week video, Ace & Jig have created a look that is all-at-once 1970’s Mary Quant meets 1992 Ce Ce Peniston realness. They have created and are marketing a truly modern-met-vintage aesthetic.  Based in ultra-hip Brooklyn, the growing fashion brand is making a name for itself in ladies circles everywhere. We thought we’d ponder a bit on why.  ace-jig

First off, Ace & Jig’s looks are often created with mixed patterns. After years of solids in so many fashion spaces, mixed colors and patterns add a sense of vibrancy that most catwalks haven’t seen since the 90’s.

Politics is certainly playing a role here. With a new President about to step into the White House, a sense of humor and irony is one major consideration the fashion world offers us.  Ace & Jig’s looks are funky, sassy, and a face-slap to those who can’t accept bright ideas, diverse people, and of course, mixed patterns. Our circles are connected.

For those of us who are image consultants, the rules to follow are changing. Ace & Jig seems to embrace the fashion victim in us all – they accept that the off-sized, baggy and uber-comfy can reign – even in high fashion.  Consultants should take heed and get a little loose with definitions, structure, fabrics and accessories. Diversifying your closet will diversify your creative brain – and your life!

What do you think about Ace & Jig?

Mastering Color (as Image Consultants)

Frequently, we hear about someone with great credentials who doesn’t seem able to advance in his or her career. Yet someone else, less qualified, does. Why is that? It may be that the second person embodies a stronger visual credibility.

What is visual credibility, and how does it impact your clients? Visual credibility is the ability to sell yourself as the admirable, respected person that you are. The tool for empowering your clients to do that is all in the wardrobe, as well as in their grooming habits. It is important to remember that looks do matter, and that your clients have much more control over creating positive outcomes than they might realize.

At the same time, it is entirely possible for clients to make changes without taking drastic measures like plastic surgery, acquiring a $10,000 wardrobe, or spending two weeks at a health and fitness resort.

On February 13, Shanna Pecoraro and the NYC Image Consultant Academy will offer a class to help image consultants and stylists improve their color recommendations, which will help clients vastly improve their visual credibility.

In the program, consultants can expect to become stronger at:

  • Pairing colors that are uniquely flattering to clients
  • Matching the level of respect your clients receive with clothes that magically convey a high level of visual credibility
  • Finding ways to distinguish your clients’ unique personal style
  • Making improvements to your clients’ visual credibility within 24 hours

Take a look at our “Steps to Your Best Coloring” course in NYC on February 15, 2017 – and let us know what questions you may have. Additional details can be found below, and you can click here to register. In case you’re interested, our popular “FAST TRACK to becoming an image consultant” program is also taking place on February 14 – 20 in NYC. Click here for more info.

Reworking and Repairing Your Wardrobe

In the image consulting business, we often encourage our clients to “shop your closet” to save time and money. Sometimes, though, it’s less about “shopping” your closet and remixing the items you pair together. This month, we’re focused on our clients who have lost a portion of their wardrobe or accessories due to stains, tears, or just normal wear and tear.  Many of these folks are using up valuable space in their closets and drawers, holding on to items that just need a little nip and tuck!

As you’re pulling together your Halloween costumes this year, take a look at these fun, easy fashion and beauty tricks to make the most of your space and your collection.

  • Want a new statement necklace? Work with what you’ve got: Layer several necklaces together with a story in mind: pair complimentary colors, as well as different metals combinations. Or, try playing with varied elements such as gems and chains together. Doing this can often create memorable looks!

  • Wear a print scarf when you are dining out. If you experience spills, the print in the scarf will hide the damage, and your outfit will remain intact. When dessert concludes, simply slip the scarf off.

  • Use an eyeglass cloth to clean your patent leather handbags or shoes. It’ll remove any smudges or fingerprints. Most eyeglass cloths are machine washable, so don’t forget to throw them in with your delicates once in a while (but do not tumble dry!).

  • Baby wipes often create the perfect removal of makeup stains that accidently get on your new blouse.

  • Do you enjoy going barefoot inside your favorite pair of flats, but don’t enjoy the sticky feeling when they sweat? An easy fix is to keep a travel-sized foot powder handy to sprinkle inside your shoes before you put them on. It adds a touch of fragrance and absorbs moisture.

  • Want to belt a dress or top but don’t have the right color or texture? Check your ribbon stash. You may just have the right pop of color that pulls an outfit together while adding a creative, feminine touch.

  • Sick of that tangled ball of jewelry that’s cluttering up your drawer? Use a divider (from any office supplies store) in your drawer to group your jewelry by color or metal.

The best part about these tips is that you can use them all year round

Picking the Right Pair of Glasses

choosing-eye-glasses

Last week, we were just about to move past the “back to school” sales and promotions that have created lines in stores and on e-commerce sites for the past 5-6 weeks. While working with a client on seasonal wardrobe update, he asked for help with selecting a new pair of eyeglasses. After two years of the same pair, he was ready for a change.

Our client’s primary interest was to create more definition around his eyes – using the frames to make his blue eyes pop while quite literally framing his face. We ended up spending several hours on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, testing frames and having lots of laughs while trying on various sunglasses, eyeglasses, and other in-store accessories. We narrowed it down to 2 pairs: a stunning midnight blue pair from Face à Face at Occhiali’s store, as well as a cobalt blue pair from Warby Parker, at their upper eastside shop.

In case you are looking to refresh your fall look, a new pair of eyeglasses can make a huge difference – and sometimes, a faster and more distinctive difference than shopping for new fall eye colors or lip liners. Here are a few tips that can help you with eyeglass selection:

  • Consider your face shape before choosing glasses. For example: If you like to balance your round face, go for glasses with an angular shape. It is always flattering
  • A wide bridge between the lenses often fits better for the person with wider set eyes.
  • Consider the weight of frames you currently have and think about an adjustment period if you end up finding frames that are heavier
  • Consider other glasses you have. Assuming your prescription hasn’t changed, ask yourself what color and glasses “look” will best communicate the image you hope to portray next season.
  • If you wear contacts daily (or have perfect eyesight – lucky devil!), consider finding a pair of eyeglasses with no prescription. Style-only glasses are fun to shop for, and can make you appear smarter, sexier, and more confident in all sorts of instances.

By the way, our client ends up snagging the midnight blue pair which made his blue eyes pop. Let us know your eyeglass finds and selections below, or via our Twitter handle @nycimageacademy
