Finding Inspiration on Pinterest

Sometimes, clients need a little visual encouragement to consider a new look (even when they are desperately asking for it!). It’s not always easy to find what you need for inspiration – and when you do, often times e-commerce sites and links only work for a short time, plus, finding the right INSPIRATION for a look can be researched without having to simultaneously SHOP by colors, styles or price.

The team and I at NYC Image Consultant Academy have recently moved our Polyvore images of inspiration over to Pinterest, and use the collection of thousands of looks, across many boards and pins, for client inspiration. From casual, skinny-jeans-on-the-go vibes to radical, artsy-runway looks, we have been inspired by it all!

Building Confidence Like A Pro

Projecting confidence in your professional life is sometimes easier to think about than to actually practice. Many of us truly know most of the answers, know when and when not to ask for help, and generally know our stuff when it comes to our business and the tasks we are responsible for. Sometimes, having to prove those abilities comes down to being confident. As any successful salesperson or longtime executive will tell you, “acting the part” is 50% of success!

So, thinking of yourself inhabiting the shoes of the role you want can build your confidence tremendously. If you get stuck, it may help to remember these other confidence-building tips:

  • Build upon the image you want others to witness in you – Your image is all about your confidence – your swagger! – and not the price tag of your shoes or the balance in your checking account.

  • Say “No” when you must – You can’t always meet everyone’s expectations or behave in a fashion that matches the world’s apparent plan. If you know you can’t reach a goal, say it as soon as you know it. You will all be better for it.

  • Think of yourself as a business owner, even if you work for someone else -“Owning it” like it’s yours gives you confidence like nothing else, as it will allow you to advocate on behalf of your product, sell through your service, and stand up for yourself confidently when you need to.

  • Express Yourself in Practice – Through your writing, reading, and listening skills. Write to the point, with an eye for the memorable. Read with an open mind and take notes. And listen without abandon, more than you speak: this is how we learn most rapidly about what’s great (and not so great) in the world; listening well also shows respect to those you are working with.

  • Spend most of your time with people who support you – It’s hard to hear sometimes, but you dishonor your mind and spirit when you cohort with people who criticize, condemn or downplay your importance. Instead of letting your friends, colleagues or clients dictate who you are, build your self-confidence by tuning into YOU. If this is difficult to practice, consider working with a therapist or life coach for a period, to help you recognize what anxiety, dread, disappointment, joy, contentment, and relief actually feel like – and then notice how you feel when you’re with certain people. If people close to you bring you down consistently, find new friends, and figure out a way to connect with positive clients and colleagues to build back your confidence.

  • Define what “taking risks” means to you – and take a little one every day — When you distrust yourself, or don’t reach out to others, or remain closed to vulnerability, or stop making waves, you miss too much! Take a small risk each and every day to get out of your comfort zone and start making bigger waves with your confident self!

Undercover Leadership Skills in Your Elevator Pitch

We’ve all read the stats telling us that 80 – 90% of communication is nonverbal. Appearing confident, willing and able connotes strength in many situations, even to folks you don’t know, and even when your verbal or written message isn’t delivered the way you intend. As you’re thinking about your goals for the rest of 2017, consider our Visual Brand 3 Cs as the secret to leadership success!

Your Visual Brand 3 Cs: The Secret of Leadership

Clarity – Is your visual brand clear? Think about what you do: Position, title, and responsibility…. Does it match your business card? If not – change it! Being clear with your 1-sentence intro of yourself when someone asks, “what do you do,” is imperative.

Connection – Does your image match your industry, service, and your lifestyle? If not – think about the way your style might be updated to increase opportunities for yourself and your company.

Confidence – Are you confident in your look? Are you comfortable with your style (dressing)? If not, hold your shoulders back, greet people with a smile, and you’ll start to feel strongly very quickly.

If you need more help with this – don’t delay, hire an image consultant today!

Image consultants can help you with everything from posture, speaking tips, wardrobe, and styling, to the way you carry yourself, shake hands, and handle etiquette in various professional situations. We are here to help. www.nycimageconsultantacademy.com

Buying Tips for the Amateur Shopper

Sometimes, shopping can feel like a chore. From crowded stores to missing sizes to shipping delays, the modern shopper has a lot of (often painful) logistics to navigate in order to go about looking and feeling good. While personal shopping can take time, it often proves to have been worthwhile in the long run.

While parking lots, sidewalk traffic, and online shipping ETAs are out of the hands of image consultants, we do know a few things about style, sizing, and substance. Consider these tips next time you need to focus on the task at hand simply:

  • Shirts – Always go for a good fit (shoulders, waist, the back, and the front closure should be all be in place and yet moveable), and go for a sturdy fabric
  • Jeans – Try to find a dark wash with the right amount of stretch that also fits well with your body. I’d suggest to get one extra pair, and then hem one pair for flat shoes and another for heels
  • Raincoat – Go for a timeless style trench coat. It can lift up an outfit and will never go out of fashion
  • Dark Colored Suit — A great-quality dark suit is a wardrobe essential. Spend more on at least one well-tailored gabardine suit in your best color
  • Dress – A dark dress, in your best color palette, will fit well for nearly any occasion
  • Jacket – A perfect fitted jacket can instantly upgrade your overall look. Look for a jacket that fits the widest part of your body, with jacket shoulders that sit on your shoulders comfortably
  • Professional Shoes – If you can afford it, purchase one pair of high-quality classic pumps per season that can endure daily use. Look for soft leathers that breathe, have extra cushioning, and that have comfortable heel heights (your feet will thank you!)

Our next “Personal Shopper” 1-day training is on May 29, 2017. If shopping is your passion and you’d like to shop for others, this is the class that will help you find out if personal shopping is for you! www.nycimageconsultantacademy.com

Traveling Together: Common Courtesies in an Age of Rudeness

Kindness

Getty Image

Over the past few weeks, we’ve witnessed a large number of changes in our country’s leadership. From appointments to firings to structural changes and lawsuits, it’s been a fiery few weeks for the New Administration as the DC political set moves past the inauguration.

Whatever side you’re on, one thing is for certain: when you travel with a companion, you should always wait for her/him when getting out of a car. There are no exceptions to this rule; whether your companion is your wife, your child, your husband, your business associate or your friend. If you are traveling together to a formal engagement, you should ensure each member of your party has exited the car before moving your next expected location, together. “Together” being the key word here.

Treating your spouse/partner/friend kind and respectful way is essential in this age of rudeness. After all, it was Mark Twain who said: “A person should be allowed to have a few redeeming vices, but never bad manners.”

When you travel in groups of 2 or more, how do you ensure that your party sticks together as a unit?

Ace & Jig: The Best Up-and-Coming Brand of 2016

From their cursive-y logo to their 2016 Fashion Week video, Ace & Jig have created a look that is all-at-once 1970’s Mary Quant meets 1992 Ce Ce Peniston realness. They have created and are marketing a truly modern-met-vintage aesthetic.  Based in ultra-hip Brooklyn, the growing fashion brand is making a name for itself in ladies circles everywhere. We thought we’d ponder a bit on why.  ace-jig

First off, Ace & Jig’s looks are often created with mixed patterns. After years of solids in so many fashion spaces, mixed colors and patterns add a sense of vibrancy that most catwalks haven’t seen since the 90’s.

Politics is certainly playing a role here. With a new President about to step into the White House, a sense of humor and irony is one major consideration the fashion world offers us.  Ace & Jig’s looks are funky, sassy, and a face-slap to those who can’t accept bright ideas, diverse people, and of course, mixed patterns. Our circles are connected.

For those of us who are image consultants, the rules to follow are changing. Ace & Jig seems to embrace the fashion victim in us all – they accept that the off-sized, baggy and uber-comfy can reign – even in high fashion.  Consultants should take heed and get a little loose with definitions, structure, fabrics and accessories. Diversifying your closet will diversify your creative brain – and your life!

What do you think about Ace & Jig?

Mastering Color (as Image Consultants)

Frequently, we hear about someone with great credentials who doesn’t seem able to advance in his or her career. Yet someone else, less qualified, does. Why is that? It may be that the second person embodies a stronger visual credibility.

What is visual credibility, and how does it impact your clients? Visual credibility is the ability to sell yourself as the admirable, respected person that you are. The tool for empowering your clients to do that is all in the wardrobe, as well as in their grooming habits. It is important to remember that looks do matter, and that your clients have much more control over creating positive outcomes than they might realize.

At the same time, it is entirely possible for clients to make changes without taking drastic measures like plastic surgery, acquiring a $10,000 wardrobe, or spending two weeks at a health and fitness resort.

On February 13, Shanna Pecoraro and the NYC Image Consultant Academy will offer a class to help image consultants and stylists improve their color recommendations, which will help clients vastly improve their visual credibility.

In the program, consultants can expect to become stronger at:

  • Pairing colors that are uniquely flattering to clients
  • Matching the level of respect your clients receive with clothes that magically convey a high level of visual credibility
  • Finding ways to distinguish your clients’ unique personal style
  • Making improvements to your clients’ visual credibility within 24 hours

Take a look at our “Steps to Your Best Coloring” course in NYC on February 15, 2017 – and let us know what questions you may have. Additional details can be found below, and you can click here to register. In case you’re interested, our popular “FAST TRACK to becoming an image consultant” program is also taking place on February 14 – 20 in NYC. Click here for more info.
