Mastering Color (as Image Consultants)

Frequently, we hear about someone with great credentials who doesn’t seem able to advance in his or her career. Yet someone else, less qualified, does. Why is that? It may be that the second person embodies a stronger visual credibility.

What is visual credibility, and how does it impact your clients? Visual credibility is the ability to sell yourself as the admirable, respected person that you are. The tool for empowering your clients to do that is all in the wardrobe, as well as in their grooming habits. It is important to remember that looks do matter, and that your clients have much more control over creating positive outcomes than they might realize.

At the same time, it is entirely possible for clients to make changes without taking drastic measures like plastic surgery, acquiring a $10,000 wardrobe, or spending two weeks at a health and fitness resort.

On February 13, Shanna Pecoraro and the NYC Image Consultant Academy will offer a class to help image consultants and stylists improve their color recommendations, which will help clients vastly improve their visual credibility.

In the program, consultants can expect to become stronger at:

  • Pairing colors that are uniquely flattering to clients
  • Matching the level of respect your clients receive with clothes that magically convey a high level of visual credibility
  • Finding ways to distinguish your clients’ unique personal style
  • Making improvements to your clients’ visual credibility within 24 hours

Reworking and Repairing Your Wardrobe

In the image consulting business, we often encourage our clients to “shop your closet” to save time and money. Sometimes, though, it’s less about “shopping” your closet and remixing the items you pair together. This month, we’re focused on our clients who have lost a portion of their wardrobe or accessories due to stains, tears, or just normal wear and tear.  Many of these folks are using up valuable space in their closets and drawers, holding on to items that just need a little nip and tuck!

As you’re pulling together your Halloween costumes this year, take a look at these fun, easy fashion and beauty tricks to make the most of your space and your collection.

  • Want a new statement necklace? Work with what you’ve got: Layer several necklaces together with a story in mind: pair complimentary colors, as well as different metals combinations. Or, try playing with varied elements such as gems and chains together. Doing this can often create memorable looks!

  • Wear a print scarf when you are dining out. If you experience spills, the print in the scarf will hide the damage, and your outfit will remain intact. When dessert concludes, simply slip the scarf off.

  • Use an eyeglass cloth to clean your patent leather handbags or shoes. It’ll remove any smudges or fingerprints. Most eyeglass cloths are machine washable, so don’t forget to throw them in with your delicates once in a while (but do not tumble dry!).

  • Baby wipes often create the perfect removal of makeup stains that accidently get on your new blouse.

  • Do you enjoy going barefoot inside your favorite pair of flats, but don’t enjoy the sticky feeling when they sweat? An easy fix is to keep a travel-sized foot powder handy to sprinkle inside your shoes before you put them on. It adds a touch of fragrance and absorbs moisture.

  • Want to belt a dress or top but don’t have the right color or texture? Check your ribbon stash. You may just have the right pop of color that pulls an outfit together while adding a creative, feminine touch.

  • Sick of that tangled ball of jewelry that’s cluttering up your drawer? Use a divider (from any office supplies store) in your drawer to group your jewelry by color or metal.

The best part about these tips is that you can use them all year round

Picking the Right Pair of Glasses

choosing-eye-glasses

Last week, we were just about to move past the “back to school” sales and promotions that have created lines in stores and on e-commerce sites for the past 5-6 weeks. While working with a client on seasonal wardrobe update, he asked for help with selecting a new pair of eyeglasses. After two years of the same pair, he was ready for a change.

Our client’s primary interest was to create more definition around his eyes – using the frames to make his blue eyes pop while quite literally framing his face. We ended up spending several hours on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, testing frames and having lots of laughs while trying on various sunglasses, eyeglasses, and other in-store accessories. We narrowed it down to 2 pairs: a stunning midnight blue pair from Face à Face at Occhiali’s store, as well as a cobalt blue pair from Warby Parker, at their upper eastside shop.

In case you are looking to refresh your fall look, a new pair of eyeglasses can make a huge difference – and sometimes, a faster and more distinctive difference than shopping for new fall eye colors or lip liners. Here are a few tips that can help you with eyeglass selection:

  • Consider your face shape before choosing glasses. For example: If you like to balance your round face, go for glasses with an angular shape. It is always flattering
  • A wide bridge between the lenses often fits better for the person with wider set eyes.
  • Consider the weight of frames you currently have and think about an adjustment period if you end up finding frames that are heavier
  • Consider other glasses you have. Assuming your prescription hasn’t changed, ask yourself what color and glasses “look” will best communicate the image you hope to portray next season.
  • If you wear contacts daily (or have perfect eyesight – lucky devil!), consider finding a pair of eyeglasses with no prescription. Style-only glasses are fun to shop for, and can make you appear smarter, sexier, and more confident in all sorts of instances.

By the way, our client ends up snagging the midnight blue pair which made his blue eyes pop. Let us know your eyeglass finds and selections below, or via our Twitter handle @nycimageacademy

Party Tips for Young Ladies

A few months back I met a lovely young lady named Amy on an airplane. Toward the end of the flight, she said: “I have an invitation from my friend Jane for her parent’s Spring Party. Could you give me few tips before I go to the party since I have never been to a grown-up party before?”

Garden partyGarden Party 1

We discussed a few tips and dress options, and later I thought that perhaps this sort of thing could be useful to many young ladies out there. I shared the following tips with Amy, and am now sharing them with you. At grown-up parties, it is best to:

  • Say “hello” to the host and offer to help serve the food/clean up
  • Speak politely; try not to be loud and rude
  • Introduce yourself and offer a friendly handshake with a good eye contact and smile
  • Ask questions; questions are often a good way to start a conversation
  • Take an interest in what is going on
  • Do a little research on your host; find out if they are a member of a club or group that your parents or friends belong to
  • Try leaving some room on your plate for your cup, so you can put your plate on your lap and eat from the plate and drink from the cup in a chair
  • At the end of the party give a friendly goodbye and say “thanks for hosting such a lovely party/evening.”
  • Write a “thank-you” card within 24 hours after the party; if you run out of time, a short and personal Thank-you email can suffice

Some may think these tips are old fashioned, but if you want to be successful in the future, these basic courtesies and acts of kindness are always winning and essential formulas for young ladies to follow.

The Perfect Jeans for Your Body

It’s too bad that not every outfit will fit into place as perfectly as those magical jeans that fit all four friends despite their different shapes and sizes in The Sisterhood of Traveling Pants. But, don’t worry! Finding a pair of Perfect Jeans for your body isn’t a rocket science if you understand what your body assets and challenges are. Just follow the tips below you’ll find a best-fitting jeans in no time!

The Perfect Jeans

If you have a small waist – Having a small waist is an asset. But when you are buying ready-made jeans, you might find a problem with the fitting.

Look for a low-rise style that has a waistband that sits on your hips, not at the waist, which can prevent gapping. Opt for a style with a waistband that is slightly higher in the back and drops lower in the front.

If you have a flat butt – Look for a lower-rise style with back pockets that sit higher on the butt. It offers a snugger fit, and the pockets draw the eyes up, giving the butt a visual lift. Or ask for a style with a built-in panel in the back which lifts the butt.

If you have a big butt – Try to look for a style with no additional design on the back pockets. A trouser-cut style with a darker wash will be more comfortable and will give you a slimmer look.

If you have full thighs & hips – Avoid a low-rise style and try to look for a pair of trouser- cut jeans, if you want to have a streamlined look. Stay away from skinny jeans and look for the relaxed-fit style.

If you have a full tummy — Try to find a style that fastens below the belly button or looks for a dark colored style with built-in tummy control panels in higher-rise — it’ll help remove any unflattering bulges. Pair it with heels for a slimmer look.

Just remember the dressing ABC:

Accentuate your body assets, Balance the difference and Camouflage the body challenges.

We hope these tips inspire your seasonal shopping plans. Let us know what you think on the blog and Twitter, @nycimageacademy For more info at www.nycimageconsultantacademy.com

Blending Shades: Colors of the Year

Just before the holidays, PANTONE announced their Color of the Year Selection for 2016, which resulted in a first for the color authority: a blending of two shades. Rose Quartz and Serenity, paired side-by-side, suggest a calming union that signifies a sense of connectedness and mindfulness through color.

So, how does this blended color affect your clients’ wardrobe planning in Spring 2016?

Chances are, you’re already getting comfortable with the color. If you’re an Apple fan, you’ve already witnessed the incredible popularity of the Rose Gold iPhone 6S, which Apple re-used for its launch of the smaller MacBook laptop last year. Very similar color shades are popping up on sweaters, pens, eye make-up – and nearly everywhere it seems to scream SPRING!

The colors of the Spring 2016

The colors of the Spring 2016

Once you’ve determined your client’s optimal color palette, consider the Rose Quartz and Serenity as best for those with a Soft Palette, or those with Cool Palette (our Pocket Color Compass –Steps To Your Best Coloring book can help you do this). Darker shades and combinations of the two colors may provide attractive options for nearly all palettes’, especially for ladies’ pants, skirts, accessories (think scarves, gloves, glasses), and gifts this year as well.

So keep your eyes open for Rose Quartz and Serenity, but bear in mind that these are trendy colors (truly of the moment)and may not be best for your skin tone or that of your clients. Here, we chose the top nine colors for you to try on next time you shop. Send us a photo or video, and let us know how these shades work for you!

Does Your Taxi-Taking Etiquette Need Some Work?

Whether you’re accustomed to taking a yellow cab daily, or perhaps an Uber, Lyft, or other taxi/ride-share program here and there – you’ve at some point encountered an unexpectedly rude driver. In fact, folks in our community have told us they’ve had such frustrating experiences so many times that they avoid taking taxis as much as possible.

Taxi etiquette rules

Taxi etiquette rules

Whether you like them or not, taxis are ubiquitous in many urban environments and at some point, you’ll need to jump in and take one.

We’ve put together a list of taxi etiquette rules to remember, both for taxi drivers and for you – the rider.  Etiquette, like all things in life, works both ways.

For Taxi DRIVERS:

  1. Welcome the passenger with a warm “hello” and ask for their destination address and cross street; remember they are your customer from the moment they hail your cab to the moment they step out
  2. Repeat the address to the passenger, and confirm the desired street corner as you near the destination. Speak loudly to avoid miscommunication
  3. Ask the passenger if the temperature is acceptable, and confirm that the current background volume (radio, Taxi TV etc) is acceptable
  4. Drive safely, obeying traffic signals and avoid honking
  5. Use your mobile phone as minimally as possible while a passenger is with you
  6. Ensure your taxi’s bankcard system is functioning; alert riders to any issues with it upon their entering your taxi
  7. Do not smoke in the vehicle at any time
  8. Avoid using heavily scented air fresheners in your taxi. Many people are sensitive to the chemicals in these fresheners, which can cause migraines or allergic reactions to some

For Taxi RIDERS:

  1. Greet the driver upon entering the taxi
  2. Be ready to announce your intended destination’s address, and a preferred route if you have one (highways, no highways, etc). Listen to your driver’s opinion on specific routes; they have been on shift most of the day and may be aware of traffic issues or alternate routes you won’t know about
  3. Your driver is not a mind reader – so alert him or her to temperature and volume needs shortly after entering the taxi
  4. Take cups, gum, Kleenex, and other trash with you upon your exit. The taxi is someone’s workspace and a future rider’s safe space, not a trashcan
  5. Put on your seatbelt for the duration of the ride. Your safety is paramount
  6. If you are feeling ill or have motion sensitivities, alert your driver immediately if you need to pull over
  7. Treat the driver with the same respect as you would any other professional; you may end up riding with them again
  8. Upon reaching your destination, pay your bill promptly and tip appropriately. 15% is acceptable for most rides, although late nights rides or heavy rain/snow conditions justify an additional few dollars in tip
